US President Donald Trump warned on Friday that he would walk out of his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin if the talks did not go well, indicating his hope that “something” would be achieved during the talks.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump explained that his mission is to “bring both sides to the negotiating table, as they are the decision-makers, to resolve the conflict in Ukraine.” He noted that the issue of land swaps will be discussed with Putin, but the final decision rests with the Ukrainian side, and he will not negotiate on their behalf.
He added that any progress in the negotiations on Ukraine could pave the way for a later discussion of economic relations with Russia, warning that “the economic repercussions for Russia will be dire if we do not reach an agreement.”
US President Donald Trump is scheduled to greet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, upon his arrival in Alaska on Friday, according to the Kremlin.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said before Putin’s departure for Alaska: “President Putin is scheduled to land at 11:00 a.m. local time. President Trump will meet him on the tarmac.”
