US President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that the United States had held “good talks” with Iran, arguing that reaching an agreement with them was better than “destroying what’s left of the country,” but he threatened to resume military action if negotiations failed.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump explained that “it is better to reach an agreement with Iran than to destroy the rest of the country,” adding, “If Iran does not make a deal with us, I will come back and finish the job.”
He pointed out that “the talks may be great, then Iran comes along and says that we are not talking or that we have not discussed the nuclear issue,” stressing that the United States is “in a very strong position vis-à-vis Iran.”
Trump added that US forces “destroyed Iran’s air defenses, and destroyed much of their weaponry,” noting that “the location of Jabal al-Fas in Iran is not a big problem.”
He continued: “I can destroy most of Iran’s bridges in less than an hour,” noting that “there are many Republicans who want him to continue and move forward with military action against Iran.”
The US president stressed that “Iran can no longer be allowed to violate agreements.”
Trump confirmed on Monday that his “freeze” of attacks on Iran came in response to a request from mediating countries to give negotiations a chance.
Regional mediators are seeking to reduce escalating tensions between the United States and Iran, amid calls for a new round of negotiations, especially after the recent exchange of fire and US President Donald Trump’s decision to terminate the memorandum of understanding due to what he described as Iranian attacks on oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.
