Trump: China opposes Iran possessing a nuclear weapon

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he would not object to Iran suspending its nuclear program for 20 years, provided it was a “real commitment”.
Trump added, according to Reuters, that his visit to China was “historic,” confirming that “major trade agreements” were signed during the visit.
He noted that he had spoken at length with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Taiwan and Iran, stating that there was a “convergence of views,” and pointing out that the Chinese president had confirmed to him his opposition to Iran possessing a nuclear weapon.
He also clarified that he “did not ask the Chinese president to pressure Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz,” noting that “80% of Iran’s missile capabilities have been destroyed.”
Trump continued, saying, “He made no commitment to the Chinese president regarding Taiwan,” adding that “the United States has destroyed Iran’s military capabilities, and the embargo imposed on it is effective.”
He concluded by saying that he would make “a decision within days regarding lifting sanctions on Chinese oil companies that buy Iranian oil.”
The US president ended his visit to China and departed for the United States, according to a report by China Central Television earlier today.
Earlier today, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that understandings had been reached to postpone negotiations on the nuclear issue to a later time. While he considered the situation in the Strait of Hormuz to be “complicated” and requiring an effort to find a solution, he welcomed the efforts of Russia, China, India and Pakistan to resolve the existing crisis.
