On Sunday, US President Donald Trump called for the arrest of former US President Barack Obama amid an ongoing investigation into the 2020 presidential election, accusing him of being behind “fabricated” allegations regarding what is known as the “Russian interference” case in the US elections.
The American Conservative website quoted Trump as saying that “Obama tried to carry out a political coup during the 2016 presidential election by using the Russia issue to undermine his legitimacy and jeopardize his victory in the presidential race.”
Earlier, the Wall Street Journal quoted US presidential administration officials as saying that US Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard is leading an investigation into the results of the 2020 presidential election, which was lost by current President Donald Trump.
According to the newspaper, “Gabbard is reviewing information about voting machines and analyzing data from swing states, and is also consulting with intelligence agencies about the possibility of foreign interference in the 2020 election.”
The newspaper notes that “the Trump administration has been investigating the actions of its opponents in the previous election in recent days,” while the newspaper quoted a post by Trump on the “Truth Social” platform this week, in which he indicated that “Gabbard revealed hundreds of documents proving that Obama personally ordered CIA agents to fabricate false intelligence against Trump.”
In his post, Trump accused former President Barack Obama of attempting a coup and trying to prevent his “sweeping victory” in the 2016 election. The US president also demanded Obama’s “immediate” arrest. According to a post on the American Conservative website, the demand to arrest Obama came just one day after the FBI seized documents from a polling center in Fulton County near Atlanta related to the 2020 election.
The website noted that “the seizure of documents from the center was remarkable because of the presence of a number of senior administration officials, including Gabbard and FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey.”
Trump has repeatedly refused to concede defeat in the 2020 election, claiming fraud, and continues to question the integrity of the election. However, in 2024, he admitted in an interview with podcast host Lex Friedman that he lost by a narrow margin in 2020.
Russia has repeatedly denied US accusations of “interference,” including in US elections, with Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov describing them as “completely unfounded.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, speaking about allegations of “Russian interference” in the elections of various countries, stated that there are no facts to support this.
