US President Donald Trump on Wednesday tasked his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, with developing a comprehensive plan for the day after the war in Gaza, a move that reasserts Kushner’s position as one of America’s most prominent policymakers in the region .
According to Israel’s Channel 12, “Israeli Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer met with US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in Miami to discuss the ceasefire proposal and the US post-war plan .”
The channel explained that “Kushner has begun to emerge as a pivotal figure in formulating the American vision for the future of Gaza .”
“Israel will have influence, but we will not be Benjamin Netanyahu’s plan or Ron Dermer’s plan ,” a US official told the channel.
Channel 12 reported that “new details have emerged regarding the American proposal for a comprehensive agreement that includes prisoner releases and a ceasefire.” While previous reports indicated that “the latest proposal sent by Trump to Hamas stipulated the release of all Israeli prisoners on the first day of the truce, the current formula stipulates the release of all living prisoners within the first 48 hours .”
The bodies of slain prisoners will also be returned during the ceasefire, but the exact timetable will be determined through indirect talks between Hamas and Israel .
Hamas confirmed that it “needs time to locate all the bodies,” according to the channel .
The ceasefire will last for sixty days or until the end of negotiations if they are still ongoing .
These talks will focus on three main topics: disarming Hamas, forming the government that will run Gaza after Hamas, and the details of the phased withdrawal of the Israeli army .
According to the proposal, “the Israeli army will eventually withdraw completely from Gaza, including the buffer zone surrounding the border, with the pace of withdrawal to be determined by the ability of the new government in Gaza to ensure security in the areas Israel is leaving .”
Israel believes that “Hamas’ leadership is divided over the proposal, with some officials considering Trump’s guarantees unreliable and the proposal giving Israel excessive control over the pace of its withdrawal .”
A senior Israeli official told Channel 12, “Hamas must understand from Qatar and Egypt that the option of a partial agreement is no longer on the table .”
Kushner served as a senior advisor to Trump during his first term, between 2017 and 2021, and played a key role in brokering the Abraham Accords, but he currently holds no official position in the White House.
