The transport sector in Iraq is witnessing a new beginning with the completion of several strategic projects by the end of this year, aimed at developing infrastructure, improving connectivity between governorates, and enhancing the efficiency of the movement of people and goods.
According to observers, the projects represent an important step to support economic growth and consolidate Iraq’s position as a regional trade corridor, contributing to building a modern transport system that serves the requirements of sustainable development.
In this regard, the Director of the Ministry’s Media Office, Maitham Al-Safi, told Al-Sabah: “The most prominent strategic service projects of the Ministry, which are expected to be completed by the end of this year, are the completion of the first phase of the Grand Faw Port project, in addition to the road leading to it with the container yards, as well as the completion of the navigation channel, in addition to the submerged tunnel, which he considered one of the most important infrastructure projects for the port, and the last two pieces of it were recently installed.”
Regarding the strategic development road project, which will contribute to moving the country to the ranks of countries with advanced economies, he revealed that its detailed designs will be completed by the end of 2025, after the initial ones were completed earlier, noting that the project will be presented to major international companies to implement it with advanced standard specifications, and within Iraq’s vision of building high-tech strategic projects.
As for the air transport sector, Al-Safi mentioned that the project to develop Baghdad International Airport is currently being launched within the international financing portfolio, in addition to preparing for the opening of Nasiriyah International Airport, which he considered one of the important projects that the government intends to complete by the end of this year as well, and within international specifications, especially after its success in reopening Mosul Airport last week.
He also noted in the same context that there are complex files in which advanced rates have been achieved in resolving them, foremost among them being the issue of the European ban on the Green Bird, and it is hoped that the process of correcting its (IOSA) program will be completed by the end of this year, after which the (TCO) file will be moved on, which will give the national carrier a greater opportunity to return to flying in European airspace.
Regarding the service projects related to the public transport sector, the ministry spokesman stated that the second package of them has been launched, especially after the ministry’s success in opening 43 lines in Baghdad and 90 others in the governorates, stressing that the ministry will continue to maintain the momentum of these plans, in conjunction with the opening of new garages within Baghdad and all the country’s governorates.
