Transportation - Comprehensive airport development within the framework of the development roadmap visionThe Ministry of Transport continues to implement comprehensive development plans aimed at raising the efficiency of airports and linking them to development projects, within the framework of a strategic vision aimed at strengthening Iraq’s position on the regional and international air transport map, and in accordance with the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The official spokesman for the ministry, Maitham Al-Safi, confirmed to Al-Sabah that work has been ongoing since the ministry took over the airports file in 2024, within an ambitious plan to link them to the development road project that connects the southern ports to Europe via land and rail transport networks, in a way that contributes to supporting the national economy.

He pointed out that Baghdad International Airport is witnessing the implementation of more than 26 development projects, including the rehabilitation of the halls, the modernization of the airfield, and the improvement of logistics services, roads and external areas, as well as the signing of a contract with a specialized Spanish company to develop the automatic landing system to enhance the safety and efficiency of takeoff and landing operations.

Al-Safi explained that these efforts aim to transform the airport into a civilized gateway to the capital and a pivotal center for air transport in the region.

In the north of the country, Al-Safi stated that Mosul International Airport was reopened in June 2025 after being rehabilitated to the highest international standards and equipped with advanced navigation systems from reputable European manufacturers. He explained that the ministry is coordinating with Iraqi Airways to operate domestic flights, paving the way for the launch of international flights through a contract with a specialized international company.

He stressed that the airport will form an economic and tourist gateway for Nineveh Governorate, and will contribute to revitalizing investment, trade and tourism activity in the region.

As for Nasiriyah International Airport, it has witnessed a significant leap in completion rates, rising to the final stages after previously being only 3% complete before the formation of a special executive committee to oversee the project, according to Al-Safi. He explained that the ministry is awaiting the delivery of modern navigation equipment in preparation for the airport’s opening before the end of this year. He noted that it will be the only air gateway for Dhi Qar Governorate and will contribute to supporting investment, tourism, and air cargo traffic, in addition to its direct connection to the Development Road project. In the south, the spokesperson stated that Basra International Airport continues to operate with high efficiency, especially during the period of temporary closure of Iraqi airspace due to recent regional events, which has strengthened its position as a key hub for civil aviation in the south of the country. Najaf International Airport also continued to provide its services during the massive pilgrimages and religious seasons, in addition to regular flights, as part of the ministry’s plan to expand its capacity and improve the level of services provided to passengers. In the area of airspace management, he reported that the General Company for Air Navigation Services recorded more than 865 daily overflights, a figure that reflects growing international confidence in Iraq as a strategic hub for civil aviation and boosts national revenues from overflight fees. He emphasized the country’s ability to manage its airspace with high efficiency and advanced safety standards. Al-Safi noted that Iraqi Airways has witnessed a qualitative leap in fleet modernization and route expansion over the past two years, receiving 13 new aircraft, including Dreamliner, Max, and Airbus models, and returning 16 grounded aircraft to service. Agreements were also signed with General Electric for engine maintenance in cooperation with the International Air Transport Association (IATA). He added that the company has expanded its route network to include European, Asian, and Gulf cities, such as Frankfurt, Berlin, Copenhagen, Munich, Düsseldorf, Moscow, and Doha, in addition to Dammam, Beijing, Muscat, and Salalah. Furthermore, the company has implemented interoperability agreements with international airlines to facilitate passenger services. Al-Safi highlighted the implementation of development projects in the services sector, including the full automation of booking and travel procedures, the activation of the lost and found baggage system, and the opening of VIP lounges at Cairo Airport, in addition to establishing new ticketing offices in Beirut and Kuala Lumpur. The company also offered special discounts for people with disabilities, cancer patients, wounded security forces personnel, and retirees, benefiting thousands of citizens between 2022 and 2024. This reflects the Ministry’s commitment to expanding social services and improving the passenger experience. The Ministry of Transport spokesperson emphasized that airport development aligns with the state’s vision to strengthen the integrated transportation network. The airports in Basra, Nasiriyah, Baghdad, Najaf, Mosul, and Karbala are linked by the Development Road project, representing a qualitative leap in building a modern national transportation network that supports the national economy.
