In implementation of the bilateral agreement between the two countries, US forces are expected to begin withdrawing from the capital, Baghdad, tomorrow, Saturday, according to what sources reported in a press statement.
Sources also clarified on Friday that US forces will withdraw from the heavily fortified Green Zone, which houses Western diplomatic centers and official headquarters, as well as Baghdad Airport and the Joint Operations Command headquarters.
According to the agreement concluded between the Iraqi and American sides last year (2024), the United States is expected to retain some forces in the Kurdistan Region for an additional year.
The Iraqi government has repeatedly confirmed that the first phase of the withdrawal of US forces operating within the international coalition fighting ISIS will end in September 2025, while the second phase will conclude in 2026.
It’s worth noting that approximately 2,500 US troops remain in Iraq as part of the coalition, undertaking training, advisory, and support missions for Iraqi forces. Their numbers were reduced following the defeat of ISIS in the country in 2017.
