The First Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Syria, Mukhlis Al-Nazer, announced that the process of replacing the old Syrian currency with the new currency actually began today, Saturday, after months of continuous and diligent work.
The observer said in a post on the “X” platform: “Since early morning, representatives of private banks and exchange companies have been flocking to the branches of the Central Bank in the governorates to receive the new lira,” stressing that “the new Syrian currency is in circulation and in the hands of citizens from today.”
On Friday, the Central Bank of Syria called for adherence to instructions regarding the preservation of the safety, quality, and appearance of Syrian banknotes, considering them as public funds and a symbol of national sovereignty, through regulating their use and circulation.
The new Syrian currency featured national symbols such as olives, wheat, citrus fruits, cotton, the Damask rose, and the Damask mulberry, while the previous historical symbols and pictures of former presidents Bashar and Hafez al-Assad were absent, with the exception of only two denominations.
Syrians’ reactions varied between welcoming the idea of getting rid of the presidents’ pictures, and criticizing the design of the currency, the chosen symbols, the reasons for choosing them, and the economic feasibility of the replacement.
President Ahmed al-Sharaa affirmed that “the new currency represents a new national phase that reflects the nature of Syria and strengthens confidence in the homeland.”
