The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported on Tuesday afternoon that a third oil tanker was struck by an unidentified drone near the Strait of Hormuz, sustaining minor damage to its hull.
The authority stated in a statement on the “X” platform, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency, that there were no injuries or environmental impacts, and that the ship is continuing its journey to its next destination.
This incident comes after a Saudi-flagged crude oil tanker and a Qatari liquefied natural gas tanker were targeted on Tuesday in the vicinity of the Strait of Hormuz near the coast of Oman.
For its part, Iranian state media confirmed the attack on the gas tanker, justifying the targeting by claiming the ship had violated instructions.
These incidents come despite the interim agreement between the United States and Iran, which included arrangements to ensure continued navigation during the period of calm, but the dispute remains over transit routes and the mechanism for managing ship traffic in the strait.
Shipping companies are facing an increasing dilemma in choosing sailing routes, amid ongoing security tensions and conflicting instructions regarding maritime corridors.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important maritime passages in the world, through which about one-fifth of the world’s oil trade passes, in addition to the largest portion of liquefied natural gas exports from the Gulf region, making any disruption to it directly impact global energy markets.
