US Treasury Secretary Scott Bisent revealed on Monday that “separate” agreements had been made with Iran for ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, while noting an estimated oil deficit of about 12 million barrels per day due to the war.
Bisent said in press statements followed by Shafaq News Agency that the energy market is suffering from a deficit of between 10 and 12 million barrels of oil per day, “and we are working to compensate for it.”
The lifting of sanctions on Russian and Iranian crude oil shipments located offshore was announced as part of measures to reduce the deficit in the energy market.
Bisent noted that “there is a continuous increase in the number of ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz on a daily basis, and this increase in ships crossing the Strait of Hormuz comes after the conclusion of separate trade agreements with Iran.”
The US Secretary of State’s remarks coincide with preparations by European Union energy ministers to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss ways to coordinate a response to the disruptions in global energy markets caused by the war with Iran, according to a document seen by Reuters.
According to Reuters, the talks are focused on assessing the latest developments in the oil and gas markets, amid escalating supply pressures and price volatility.
