The US embassy in Baghdad issued a statement on the demonstrations in the capital and other provinces since Tuesday.
The embassy, in a statement received (Baghdad today), regretted “the use of violence and urges the easing of tension,” noting that it “continues to monitor the recent protests closely.”
“Peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental right in all democracies, but there is no room for violence in demonstrations by either party,” she said.
“We regret the loss of life and offer our condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the speedy recovery of the wounded security forces and protesters,” she said.
The US State Department announced on Tuesday (October 1, 2019) that it is monitoring the demonstrations in several Iraqi provinces, including the capital Baghdad, while describing reports of casualties during the demonstrations as “very disturbing .”
“We are monitoring the demonstrations in Iraq and the reports of victims are very disturbing, ” US State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert told reporters .
She called on “all parties in Iraq” to “reduce tension .”
The capital Baghdad, the provinces of Basra, Diwaniya, Dhi Qar, Karbala, Babil, and Maysan, witnessed popular demonstrations that began since Tuesday (October 01, 2019), in response to calls by activists on social networking sites to protest against the deterioration of services and the spread of corruption and unemployment.
