The US Senate voted on a resolution supporting President Donald Trump in waging war on Iran, one day after the Senate passed a completely different resolution.
Fifty members of Congress had voted on Tuesday on a resolution stripping Trump of the authority to wage war on Iran without the approval of the House, before the result changed on Wednesday night in favor of the resolution.
Senators Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy, both Republicans, reversed their decision after previously voting to curb Trump’s powers to wage war on Iran. This time, they voted for the resolution, with Paul abstaining and Cassidy voting against its passage.
Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski also voted in favor of the resolution, while Democrat John Fetterman voted against it again.
The final result was 50 against the resolution (supporting Trump’s launching of the war), compared to 47 in favor.
Trump welcomed the new vote results, writing on Truth Social: “The Senate just changed the outcome of the vote on Iran from 50 for and 48 against, to 50 against and 47 for.”
He added: “Rand Paul and Bill Cassidy have both changed their positions. Thanks to Majority Leader John Thune, Lindsey Graham, Bernie Moreno, and everyone else.”
The US president considered that “this vote sends a warning message to Iran.”
Trump had rebuked Republican senators during a private luncheon following Tuesday’s vote.
The US president entered into a heated verbal exchange with some members because of their vote in favor of a war powers resolution that would halt any further hostilities.
