The US Department of Homeland Security announced its intention to purchase its own fleet of Boeing aircraft to use in implementing President Donald Trump’s immigration deportation policy, aiming to increase the efficiency of deportation operations and reduce costs for taxpayers. Department spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated via the
X platform that “the new aircraft will enable Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to operate more efficiently, including utilizing more organized flight paths.” She added that the new initiative will save approximately $279 million.
The Washington Post reported that the deal involves the purchase of six 737 aircraft for $140 million through Dedalus Aviation, a company established in early 2024, and not directly from the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing.
Trump has made halting illegal immigration a top priority and has taken several measures to expedite deportations and reduce the entry of migrants across the border. Human Rights First indicated that since Trump’s return to power in January, more than 1,700 deportation flights have been carried out to dozens of countries.
