After a hiatus of more than a year, the Patriotic Union and the Democratic Party resumed their meetings, in a move aimed at thawing relations between the two sides and restarting dialogues on constitutional and political entitlements, proceeding with the process according to the political norms in place since 2005, and reviewing the strategic agreements between the two parties regarding the distribution of sovereign positions in Baghdad and Erbil. This comes at a time when political parties are predicting the formation of the regional government with the birth of the federal government in Baghdad.
Burhan Sheikh Raouf, a member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, told Al-Maalomah that “the political meeting held the day before yesterday between the Patriotic Union and the Kurdistan Democratic Party came to melt the ice that had formed between the two parties as a result of the two successive electoral processes. Last year witnessed heated campaigns between the two parties during the elections for the Kurdistan Parliament and the Federal Parliament. Therefore, it became necessary to hold the meeting between the two sides to ensure a convergence of views regarding the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the participation of the Kurds in the political process in Baghdad, and discussions about the position of President of the Republic.”
He added that “the coming days will witness further meetings between the two parties in order to study and discuss the issue of forming the regional government, and other entitlements related to the federal government and the positions specific to the Kurdish component.”
Meanwhile, Ghiath Al-Surji, a senior member of Talabani’s party, told Al-Maalomah that “the issue of forming the Kurdistan Regional Government differs from the mechanism and scenario of forming the federal government in Baghdad, as there is a difference between the formation of the two governments.”
He indicated that “there is optimism regarding the resolution of the formation of the regional government as well as the birth of the federal government in Baghdad. It is likely that the issue of the two governments will be resolved simultaneously without delay or postponement of their birth. There are also ongoing meetings between the Kurdish parties in the Kurdistan Region as well as between the Kurdistan parties and the political forces in Baghdad in order to resolve matters and agree on the formation of the regional government as well as the federal government.”
On the other hand, former Kurdistan Democratic Party MP Bashar al-Kiki explained that the meeting of the two parties came in order to discuss the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government and the nomination of a candidate for the Iraqi presidency who is capable of managing the tasks assigned in the next stage,” noting that “the Democratic Party hopes to activate the powers of the President of the Republic in a way that achieves the public interest and the citizen in particular, and that the position should not be merely honorary, meaning that he should have a role in identifying constitutional violations or addressing some issues that concern everyone.”
He added that “agreeing on a presidential candidate is not limited to a specific party, but rather focuses on choosing a figure truly capable of managing the office.”
