The UN Security Council issues a resolution regarding the withdrawal of UNAMI from IraqThe UN Security Council decided, on Friday, to withdraw the UN mission from Iraq, UNAMI, by the end of 2025, at the request of the Iraqi government.
The resolution, which was adopted unanimously, stipulates extending the mandate of the mission, which was established in 2003, “for a final period of 19 months, until December 31, 2025.”

Iraq asked the United Nations Assistance Mission, which was formed after the US-led invasion of the country in 2003, to end its work by 2025, saying it no longer needs it because it has made significant progress towards stability.

Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani wrote in a letter to Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, that “Iraq was able to take important steps in many areas, especially in the work undertaken by the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq.”
