The United Arab Emirates announced on Tuesday its withdrawal from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and the OPEC+ alliance, with the decision to take effect on May 1, 2026.
The UAE stated in a statement seen by Shafaq News Agency that the decision comes in line with its long-term economic vision and the development of its energy sector, particularly with accelerating investment in local production and enhancing its role as a “reliable and responsible” producer in global energy markets.
She explained that the decision came after a comprehensive review of its production policies and current and future capabilities, in line with the “national interest,” in light of the continued geopolitical fluctuations, especially in the Arabian Gulf region and the Strait of Hormuz, which affect the balances of supply and demand.
She added that key indicators still suggest continued growth in global energy demand in the medium and long term, which requires greater flexibility in responding to market changes.
The UAE stressed that the stability of the global energy system depends on providing flexible, reliable and affordable supplies, noting that it has invested heavily to meet demand efficiently, with a focus on sustainability and production costs.
She also stressed that the decision to withdraw does not mean abandoning its role in supporting market stability, but rather comes within the framework of developing its policies in a way that enhances its ability to adapt to the dynamics of the global market.
This decision comes after decades of membership, as the UAE joined OPEC in 1967 through the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and continued after the establishment of the state in 1971, and during this period contributed to supporting the stability of the oil market and enhancing coordination between producing countries.
The withdrawal reflects a strategic shift in the UAE’s energy policies, while maintaining its active role in the global oil market.
