The British newspaper “Financial Times” revealed on Friday that the UAE confirmed its readiness to participate in an international naval force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which has been controlled by Iran since the outbreak of war.
The newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that Emirati officials had informed the US administration and their other Western allies of the Gulf state’s readiness to participate in a multinational maritime task force aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
The newspaper report stated that the UAE is trying to push dozens of countries to form a “Hormuz security force” to protect the strait from Iranian attacks and escort ships.
The UAE has been subjected to more Iranian attacks than anywhere else in the region, even Israel.
Several US allies have said they do not currently intend to send ships to open the strait, thus rejecting Trump’s request for military support to keep this vital waterway open .
France said on Thursday that it had held talks with some 35 countries in search of partners and proposals for a mission to reopen the Strait, but only after the end of the US-Israeli war on Iran.
Iran effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas used to pass, leading to higher energy prices and exacerbating fears of global inflation.
The report stated that the UAE is also working with Bahrain to obtain a UN Security Council resolution authorizing any future task force , but Russia and China may oppose this move .
Reuters reported earlier this week that members of the Security Council had begun negotiating resolutions to protect commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz , including a Bahraini draft resolution authorizing the use of ” all necessary means “.
A senior Emirati official said last week that the UAE might join US – led efforts to protect navigation in the Strait after Iran almost completely closed it to ships .
The strait is vital to the UAE’s economy, as it is a major oil exporter and a key trading hub . Iran has repeatedly launched attacks on a UAE port outside the Gulf from which oil exports are loaded .
