A Syrian court on Tuesday sentenced former Syrian President Bashar Hafez al-Assad, his brother Maher al-Assad, and a number of fugitive defendants to death after convicting them of murder, torture, and crimes against humanity, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Judge Fakhr al-Din al-Aryan, who presided over the trial, said that the court found Bashar al-Assad guilty of the felony of premeditated murder of more than one person and of children, in addition to the felony of torture, arbitrary arrest and committing crimes against humanity, and sentenced him to death.
Al-Aryan explained that Bashar al-Assad’s contribution to the crimes was “the contribution of the highest decision-maker,” noting that he harnessed state apparatuses to carry them out.
The court also sentenced Atef Najib to death, after convicting him of the crimes attributed to him, while it issued death sentences against the fugitive defendants Maher Hafez al-Assad, Fahd Jassim al-Freij, Muhammad Ayman Ayoush, Louay Ali al-Ali, Qusay Ibrahim Mahyoub, Wafiq Saleh Nasser, and Talal Fares al-Asimi, after convicting them of the felony of premeditated murder and torture leading to death.
According to the data, the sentences include fugitive defendants, which opens the door to prosecuting them outside Syrian territory.
