The National Political Council, which unites the Sunni forces that won the recent elections, failed on Tuesday evening to choose a candidate to fill the position of Speaker of Parliament.

The media office of the council stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the latter held a meeting this evening at the headquarters of the head of the National Masses Party, Ahmed Al-Jubouri (Abu Mazen), in central Baghdad, in the presence of the leaders of the parties and alliances that make up the council, to discuss the selection of the candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives.

He noted that the meeting witnessed in-depth discussions and the presentation of a number of appropriate mechanisms that would facilitate the selection of the Speaker of the House of Representatives. It was agreed to study and discuss these mechanisms in the coming days and to make a decision on them at the next meeting.

On Sunday evening, the National Political Council failed to select a candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, while affirming its commitment to the constitutional timelines called for by the President of the Republic.

This came during a meeting held by the council at the headquarters of the head of the National Resolve Alliance, Thabit al-Abbasi, in the capital, Baghdad, in the presence of the leaders of the parties and alliances that make up the council.

According to a statement issued by the council and received by Shafaq News Agency, the meeting focused on “discussing constitutional entitlements and the importance of resolving them. In this context, and in order to complete the dialogues and discussions within the National Political Council, the attendees decided to continue the discussions during a meeting to be held next Tuesday.”

The attendees affirmed their “commitment to the constitutional timelines for the House of Representatives session, which was called for by the President of the Republic on December 29, and to resolve the issue of selecting the Speaker of the House and his two deputies.”

Last Saturday, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, confirmed that the first session of the new House of Representatives, scheduled for December 29, 2025, must decide on the appointment of the Speaker of the House and his two deputies, and it is not constitutionally or legally permissible to postpone or extend it.

The National Political Council, which includes the Sunni forces that won the elections, is witnessing rapid political activity to announce the nomination of a candidate for Speaker of Parliament, through meetings described as positive that discussed the files of the Parliament’s presidency and the rights of the Sunni component.
