An official source in Anbar province reported on Friday that the meeting of the “Sunni National Council,” which was held at the home of the head of the “Progress” coalition, Mohammed al-Halbousi, in Baghdad, failed to reach an agreement to choose a new Speaker of Parliament.

The source explained to Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the meeting failed to choose a consensus figure for the position of Speaker of Parliament after rejecting the nomination of Al-Halbousi as a controversial figure who is not welcome by the rest of the political alliances, including the Kurds, especially after the intensity of the disputes over the position of President of the Republic.”

The source added that “the Sunni National Council asked the Sunni alliances to nominate a non-controversial figure for the position of Speaker of Parliament, in preparation for presenting the names to the leaders of the Sunni component and discussing them during the next session.”

He denied: “What has been rumored about the consensus of the council leaders to nominate Al-Halbousi to fill the position in the new government,” explaining that “the Sunni alliances have not put forward the name of any person for the position of Speaker of Parliament, and that what is being rumored expresses a personal opinion that is not binding.”

The source confirmed that “the coming days will see Sunni forces invited to a meeting to nominate a non-controversial figure for the position of Speaker of Parliament,” emphasizing that “Al-Halbousi is out of the race for the position for obvious reasons.”
