On Monday, the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by outgoing Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, presented a comprehensive political initiative to resolve the prime ministership issue and end the deadlock.
The media of the “Al-Furatain Movement,” which is led by Al-Sudani, stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “the Secretary-General of the Al-Furatain Movement, and head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Muhammad Shia Al-Sudani, chaired a periodic meeting of the coalition, in his office, which was dedicated to discussing the rapid developments in the political scene, and reviewing the results of the intensive dialogues that the coalition conducted with political and national forces during the past period, as well as establishing the features of its vision for managing the state in the upcoming entitlement.”
According to the statement, the coalition announced the development of a comprehensive political initiative aimed at breaking the political deadlock and ending the stalemate that has prevented the resolution of the issue of the Prime Ministership, by proposing realistic solutions based on national consensus and constitutional entitlement.
The participants also affirmed that this initiative represents a responsible political step to revive the political process and put it on the right track, noting that its details will be presented to the forces of the Coordination Framework at its upcoming meeting, which will open the door to serious political understandings that will lead to the formation of a stable government capable of managing the next stage.
The coalition stressed that the initiative stems from a firm conviction among the leadership of the Euphrates Movement and the Reconstruction and Development Coalition that political choices must be decided without procrastination, and that a strong and effective government must be formed that expresses the aspirations of the Iraqi people and places the priorities of reform and political and economic stability at the forefront of its government program.
It is worth noting that the Coordination Framework called last Monday for a session of the House of Representatives to be held and for its leadership to be elected, after it failed to agree on the formation of the government, while emphasizing the continuation of dialogues and discussions between all political parties regarding the upcoming national entitlements.
President Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid had set December 29 as the date for the first session of the Iraqi parliament.
The Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) ratified on December 14 the final results of the general elections for membership in the House of Representatives.
