The General Company for Iraqi Ports announced on Friday the start of floating the seventh concrete block inside the manufacturing basin, coinciding with the placement of the sixth block at the bottom of the Khor Al-Zubair navigation channel, as part of the Grand Faw Port project.
The company’s general manager, Farhan Al-Fartousi, told Shafaq News Agency, “This step represents a transition to a critical phase of implementation, as the flotation process includes emptying the internal balance tanks, calibrating the floating masses, and removing sediments from the basin to ensure the highest levels of accuracy. The parallelism between flotation and settling contributes to shortening time and accelerating the pace of work according to the project’s timeline.”
He explained that “the seventh piece will be transferred after being floated to the logistics dock to be equipped with advanced systems, including surveying towers, GPS systems , and integrated logistical support that will allow it to be installed underwater with high accuracy.” He indicated that installing this piece will increase the length of the completed tunnel to approximately 1,071 meters from the land approach to the end of the seventh piece.
In August, the General Company for Iraqi Ports announced the commencement of the submergence phase of the fifth concrete section of the submerged tunnel at the Grand Faw Port, dubbed “Azal.” The section will be the first to pass through the deepest section of water in the Khor Al-Zubair Canal, a step described as a pivotal milestone in the project’s various phases.
The “submerged tunnel” is a vital project at the Grand Faw Port, located in southern Basra Governorate, and connects Faw to the Umm Qasr area in southern Iraq by sea.
