The State of Law Coalition, led by former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, proposed on Sunday putting forward a “compromise” candidate to form and head the next government, indicating that this proposal is the closest to the scene during the next stage.
A prominent leader in the coalition, Amer al-Khazai, told Shafaq News Agency that “behind-the-scenes work to select the government as initial negotiations has begun, and as always, criteria are supposed to be set and disagreed upon.”
Al-Khaza’i added that “things may go towards a compromise candidate and everything is on the table during the next stage, and obtaining the premiership is no longer determined by votes, as that has not been a criterion since 2014, and we do not expect that the number of votes and seats will be a decisive factor for any party to obtain the premiership.”
He stressed that this matter is “subject to agreement and consensus among the forces of the coordinating framework.”
Political blocs continue their dialogues to map out future alliances that will pave the way for the formation of a new government in Iraq, given the absence of a clear winner who can form the government on his own.
The Electoral Commission is scheduled to announce the final election results on Monday, and will accept appeals against the results within three days.
