The State of Law Coalition reiterated its support for the nomination of its leader, Nouri al-Maliki, to head the next Iraqi federal government on Sunday, despite his previous two consecutive terms in office, from 2006 to 2014.
Coalition MP Mohammed Al-Shammari told Shafaq News Agency, “The State of Law coalition finds in its leader, Al-Maliki, a man of great experience, especially since he has served for two consecutive terms.”
He confirmed that the State of Law Coalition nominates Al-Maliki for prime minister in the next government, expecting the coalition to secure 40-45 parliamentary seats in the legislative elections scheduled for next November.
After Maliki’s two terms in office, the State of Law Coalition continued to present its leader as the sole candidate for prime minister after each election. However, due to the political disputes and controversy surrounding his tenure, which witnessed a deterioration in security and an escalation of sectarian rhetoric, and the fact that some parties held him responsible for the extremist group ISIS’s control of areas and cities estimated to comprise two-thirds of Iraq in mid-2014, he was unable to secure the position again.
On Friday morning, October 3, the Iraqi parliamentary election campaign kicked off amid a relatively calm atmosphere compared to previous elections.
According to the High Electoral Commission, the number of eligible voters exceeds 21.4 million, including approximately 20 million in the general vote and approximately 1.3 million in the special vote from security forces and displaced persons.
The Iraqi Council of Ministers set November 11, 2025, as the date for the next parliamentary elections.
