On Monday, Muwaffaq al-Khattab, an expert on Iraqi affairs, revealed the real reasons behind Iraq’s resorting to printing about 25 trillion dinars in light of the difficult economic conditions that Iraq and the region are witnessing.
The statement said in a statement to Al-Maalomah Agency, “Iraq’s resort to printing 25 trillion dinars during the era of former Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani came against the backdrop of Iraq’s approach to the collapse of its economy as a result of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, where Iraq is classified as the first affected after Iran, after its oil exports decreased to (one-tenth), which is the only source of its quarterly economy, which forced it to resort to printing currency to salvage its economic situation.”
He added that “Iraq resorted to printing currency to cover the deficit and provide salaries for its employees and retirees, not to mention that the Sudanese government hid this information, but Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein quickly raised it in front of the public, and this statement was a shock to Iraqi circles, while the Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Iraq initially remained silent about it, even though they are the concerned parties. Then the Central Bank issued a clarification that contradicted the minister’s statement and contained a lot of ambiguity.”
He stated that “the current government has no alternative at this critical time but to tighten oversight, apprehend the major figures of corruption, imprison them, and recover what they stole from the people’s resources to bolster the budget. Otherwise, Iraq will witness a rapid collapse in the value of the Iraqi dinar and severe instability that will be difficult to contain.”
