National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji discussed details of the recent security agreement signed between Baghdad and Tehran on Saturday with US Chargé d’Affaires to Iraq Stephen Fagin.
Al-Araji’s office stated in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “the meeting discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, and the importance of continuing joint cooperation in the field of combating terrorism and exchanging information and expertise.”
According to the statement, Al-Araji reviewed the details of the security memorandum of understanding signed between Iraq and Iran regarding border control, which contributes to supporting regional security and stability and preventing smuggling and infiltration. He explained that Iraq’s policies are based on its supreme national interests and operate as an independent, sovereign state.
He pointed out that “the Iraqi government pursues balanced relations with countries in the region and the world, and is pursuing a policy of diplomatic openness to friendly and sisterly countries.”
For his part, Ambassador Fagin reiterated “the United States’ support for the Iraqi government’s balanced policies in its domestic and foreign relations, appreciating the efforts made in the return of displaced persons and their rehabilitation plans.”
He also revealed that an international conference will soon be held in New York to urge countries to withdraw their nationals from the Syrian al-Hawl camp and fully resolve this issue.
Last Monday, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani sponsored the signing of a security memorandum of understanding with the Secretary-General of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, regarding security coordination on the two countries’ shared border.
Just 24 hours after the agreement, the US State Department expressed its rejection of the security memorandum of understanding recently signed between Iraq and Iran, affirming its opposition to any legislation that conflicts with US objectives and contradicts efforts to strengthen Iraq’s existing security institutions.
