The Iraqi political scene is witnessing rapid activity among the main components following the Federal Court’s ratification of the legislative election results, amid rising indications that the issue of the three presidencies will soon be resolved within the constitutional deadlines, in light of repeated assurances from political forces on the need to adhere to the time limits and not repeat previous delay scenarios.

As the constitutional deadlines enter a crucial stage, attention is turning to the movements of the political forces and the extent of their commitment to the timetables set by the constitution for the formation of the supreme authorities, as observers believe that the current political movement reflects a clear seriousness to overcome the complex of disagreements and resolve the issue of the three presidencies without disruption.

Coordination framework: Internal cohesion and political messaging

The coordinating framework emerged as one of the main drivers of this movement, through its commitment to holding periodic meetings and working to develop clear mechanisms for selecting the next prime minister, which gained the consensus of all its parties.

This cohesion sent political messages to the other components about the need to expedite the completion of their understandings, in line with the constitutional timelines and to avoid a political vacuum in the country.

Choosing the Prime Minister

The position of Prime Minister is the most prominent axis in the political consensus equation, as its resolution is directly linked to the completion of the election of the presidencies of Parliament and the Republic, which pushes the framework to push towards accelerating these files in parallel.

The Sunni component: Expediting the resolution of the parliamentary presidency.

In the same context, political developments prompted Sunni forces to form the National Political Council, in a move aimed at unifying positions and expediting the appointment of the Speaker of Parliament.

MP Yasser Watout confirmed to Al-Maalouma News Agency that all political forces agree on adhering to the constitutional timelines for forming the government, noting that the Supreme Judicial Council has set clear parameters that begin with the first session of the House of Representatives and end with the formation of the cabinet.

The election of the Speaker of Parliament represents the first step in the process of forming a government, which makes this position pivotal in accelerating or delaying the rest of the constitutional requirements.

For his part, Salam al-Zubaidi, spokesman for the Victory Coalition, explained that the coordination framework formed a special committee to communicate with political partners, especially Sunni forces, to urge them to adhere to constitutional limits.

Al-Zubaidi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the selection of the Prime Minister remains contingent upon the completion of the election of the Speaker of Parliament, which reflects the interconnectedness of constitutional entitlements and the necessity of completing them within their chronological sequence.”

The Kurdish House: Understandings to eliminate differences

On the Kurdish front, attention is focused on the upcoming meeting between the two main Kurdish parties, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party, which is expected to result in an agreement on a single candidate for the position of President of the Republic.

The leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Mahma Khalil, stressed the Kurdish forces’ commitment to adhering to the constitutional timelines.

Khalil told Al-Maalomah, “The general trend is to go to parliament with one candidate without multiple options.”

The presidency is a crucial element in the balance of power among the political factions, and a prior Kurdish agreement often proves decisive in expediting government formation.
