US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he will host the presidents of Azerbaijan and Armenia at the White House to conclude a peace treaty between the two countries and end the decades-long armed conflict between the two countries.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev “will join me at the White House for an official signing ceremony of a peace agreement.”
He concluded his post by saying that Friday “will be a historic day for Armenia, Azerbaijan, the United States, and the world.”
The two countries have been holding talks aimed at reaching a peaceful settlement, the last round of which was held last July in the UAE, but have not been able to achieve a breakthrough.
In his post, Trump wrote, “These two countries have been at war for many years, resulting in the deaths of thousands of people.”
“Many leaders have tried to end the war, but so far, thanks to Trump,” he added, expressing his “extreme pride in these two brave leaders for doing the right thing.”
The Republican president also stated that the United States will sign bilateral agreements “with both countries in pursuit of shared economic opportunities that will realize the full potential of the South Caucasus region.”
According to CBS, the agreement, which will be signed on Friday, grants the United States rights to develop a 43-kilometer corridor through Armenian territory, which will be called the “Trump Pathway for International Peace and Prosperity,” or TRIP.
In this context, a major agreement was reached in Washington on Thursday between ExxonMobil and Azerbaijan’s state-owned energy company, SOCAR, with the two parties signing a memorandum of cooperation in the presence of Aliyev and US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Aliyev and Vetkov subsequently held talks, the Azerbaijani president announced on Twitter.
Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed last March on the text of a comprehensive peace agreement.
However, Azerbaijan subsequently made a number of demands before signing the document, notably amendments to the Armenian constitution to remove any claims to the Nagorno-Karabakh region.
Baku and Yerevan fought two wars over control of this Azerbaijani region, which is inhabited by an Armenian majority. The first occurred after the fall of the Soviet Union, in which Armenia won, and the second in 2020, in which Azerbaijan won. Baku then seized the entire enclave in a 24-hour offensive in September 2023, displacing more than 100,000 Armenians.
It remained unclear on Thursday whether Azerbaijan’s demands had been met. While Trump confirmed that his administration has been “negotiating with both sides for some time,” he did not provide specific details about the document that representatives from the two countries will sign.
The last meeting between Pashinyan and Aliyev was held on July 10 in Abu Dhabi, but it did not result in any progress towards concluding a peace agreement.
Prior to that, the two leaders met last May in Albania on the sidelines of the European Political Community summit.
At the time, French President Emmanuel Macron and European Council President Antonio Costa called for the signing of a peace agreement between the two countries.
