Information / Report:
Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s ascension to the top executive position was only possible on the basis of a specific transitional period leading to early elections. However, he quickly sought to gain the support of the framework forces to remain until the end of the parliamentary term. Over time, the differences between him and the parties that supported him began to surface.
One of the most prominent issues that al-Sudani sought to invest in was the issue of roads and bridges, given its direct contact with citizens’ lives after years of government neglect. However, this issue quickly became a burden on his government after the failure of several projects and repeated cases of financial waste through awarding contracts without controls or formal competition, a situation most recently embodied by the collapse of the Husseiniya Bridge in Karbala.
Political analyst Dawood Al-Halfi told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the government has failed to manage key internal and external issues, which has exacerbated crises without finding radical solutions. This has undermined public confidence and diminished al-Sudani’s future political opportunities.”
He added that “the collapse of the Karbala Bridge revealed the extent of corruption in service projects, while the government was content with forming formal investigation committees without actually holding the corrupt accountable.” He pointed out that “the water file was another example of weak government performance, as no effective steps were taken to confront Turkish water policy despite the direct threat to water security.”
On the political front, the “Ambassadors List” scandal sparked widespread resentment after the government succumbed to pressure and favoritism at the expense of the public interest. Furthermore, the repeated withdrawal of the two draft laws for the Popular Mobilization Forces and their postponement until after the elections constituted al-Sudani’s evasion of the government’s commitments to a faction that made great sacrifices to protect the country from ISIS.
Between the files of service corruption, the water crisis, the region’s favoritism regarding the oil revenues file, the ambassadors’ scandal, and the retreat from the Popular Mobilization Law, political and popular indicators are gathering that Al-Sudani’s dream of a second term is threatened, and that the straw of these files may be enough to dash his ambition.
