The Parliamentary Transport and Communications Committee announced on Sunday the completion of the final draft of the Maritime Authority Law, stressing the importance of including it on the parliament’s agenda during the upcoming sessions, given its vital role in lifting the ban on Iraqi tankers and strengthening national maritime sovereignty.
Committee chairperson, MP Zahra Al-Bajari, told Al-Maalouma News Agency that “the Maritime Authority Law is one of the fundamental laws in developing the maritime transport sector in Iraq,” noting that its approval “will contribute to regulating maritime work, enhancing safety levels, and protecting the marine environment, in addition to opening the way for the private sector to invest in this field.”
Al-Bajari added that “the committee hopes that the parliament’s presidency will include the draft law in the next session for a final vote, after it has completed its first and second readings.” She
explained that “the approval of the law will pave the way for lifting the ban on Iraqi maritime tankers and enabling them to fly the Iraqi flag instead of the Jordanian flag, which is currently raised in exchange for fees paid to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, which constitutes a violation of sovereignty and burdens the national economy.”
It is noteworthy that the Maritime Authority Law aims to regulate and develop the Iraqi maritime sector, enhance its role in supporting the national economy, and restore Iraq’s sovereign role in territorial and international waters.
