A member of the Parliamentary Oil, Gas and Resources Committee, Bahaa al-Din al-Nouri, revealed on Monday the date for the final completion of the gas import file, indicating that Iraq will achieve gas self-sufficiency within the next five years.
Al-Nouri told Al-Maalouma Agency that “the refinery expansion plan aims to achieve a surplus for export after the completion of existing projects.”
He added that “self-sufficiency will save significant funds for the state treasury by reducing the import bill and converting crude oil into value-added petroleum products.” He stressed that “Iraq imports gas to operate power plants, which causes a budget burden of nearly $5 billion annually,” noting that “several projects will end the import of gas and its derivatives in 2028, and by 2030, Iraq will enter the phase of self-sufficiency.”
A member of the Parliamentary Oil and Gas Committee, Kazim al-Tawki, had previously revealed that the associated gas investment operations that were referred to some companies require two or three years to obtain fuel, and yet they are unable to cover the actual need for gas.
