On Saturday, Kazem Attia, a member of the Parliamentary Economics Committee, held the Central Bank responsible for the cash liquidity crisis, pointing to the banking system’s failure to find effective mechanisms to recycle currency within the system.
“The failure of the banking system has led citizens to hoard their money in their homes and lose confidence in banks despite the introduction of electronic payments,” Attia told Al-Maalouma News Agency.
He added that “most of the money supply is located outside the banking sector, which indicates weakness in the banking system,” pointing to “weak confidence in the banking system, in addition to the absence of a culture of dealing with banks and benefiting from banking services.”
He stressed that “the banking sector is very backward, and it is difficult to convince citizens to deposit their money in banks. As a result, the Iraqi economy suffers from high liquidity in the market.”
