The Joint Operations Command announced, on Wednesday, the withdrawal of all protesters from in front of the American embassy in the center of the capital, Baghdad, stressing that the Iraqi security forces secured the entire perimeter of the embassy.
“The vicinity of the United States embassy in Baghdad witnessed protests and sit-in by protesters yesterday, Tuesday, December 31, 2019, and it continued until today, and the cases of burning, breaking the doors and glass of the embassy’s main inquiries were broken,” the leadership said in a statement.
She added, “Based on Iraq’s obligations to protect diplomatic missions and embassies of countries within Iraqi territory, the Prime Minister directed the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces to secure and protect the embassy and its staff, and also called on angry demonstrators and sit-ins to withdraw from its surroundings and end protests and sit-ins and that their message had arrived, Accordingly, all the protesters withdrew, the marquee was lifted, and the demonstrations that accompanied these protests were ended, as the Iraqi security forces secured the entire perimeter of the embassy.
It is noteworthy that a security source said earlier today, Wednesday, that the sit-down protesters in front of the American embassy in the Green Zone started installing their marquees on the banks of the Tigris in the opposite side of the embassy.
And the start of the gradual withdrawal of the sit-in from the embassy, against the backdrop of a call by the Popular Mobilization Committee for them to withdraw from the embassy’s vicinity, “out of respect” for the decision of the Iraqi government, considering that their message had arrived.
And yesterday, Tuesday, a popular ceremony was held in the center of the capital, Baghdad, to cheer the martyrs of the popular crowd, who fell as a result of the American bombing in Anbar province last Sunday, while the mourners stormed the green area and went to the embassy building, raising the Iraqi flags and the crowd flags and a number of factions In protest of that bombing.
