The Ministry of Transport announced, on Sunday, that the external navigation channel project for the Grand Faw Port has reached its final stages, with a completion rate of 97%.
A statement by the Ministry received by Al-Maalouma Agency stated that “this achievement represents an advanced step towards completing the Grand Faw Port project, which is a fundamental pillar in developing the maritime transport sector in Iraq,” noting that “the project comes within the framework of the government’s services orientations to enhance maritime infrastructure and increase the capacity to receive giant commercial vessels.”
He added that “the Minister stressed the need to expedite the completion of all works at the Grand Faw Port, including the navigation channel project, which will enable the port to receive the largest ships safely and efficiently, which will enhance Iraq’s position on the regional and international maritime trade map.”
He pointed out that “the canal is 23 kilometers long, 200 meters wide, and 19.8 meters deep, while the amount of drilling products reached approximately 58 million cubic meters. The project also includes the establishment of two specialized marine platforms to monitor environmental and navigational conditions such as water levels, wind speed, and sediment movement, and linking their data to the port’s central system, ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency.”
