Planning Minister Mohammed Tamim announced on Wednesday the final results of the general population census in Iraq, indicating that the population of Iraq reached 46,118,793. Tamim stated at the press conference held today to announce the final results of the general population census in Iraq, that “the ministry, after completing the information and analyzing the data we obtained through this census, which is the first in 37 years and may be the last population census conducted according to traditional mechanisms, and future censuses will be register-based censuses, given that this census was conducted according to modern technological foundations and all Iraqis inside Iraq were counted.” He explained that “the Statistics and Geographic Information Systems Authority will prepare a comprehensive plan to count Iraqis abroad in accordance with the General Population Census Law in Iraq.”
He added that “the Statistics and Geographic Information Authority obtained through this census a huge amount of information that will be a compass for the development plans of the Iraqi government and the main key to placing projects in their real places, in addition to what researchers will learn of details and information that will be the map that draws policies based on the number of people, the presence of people and the urban centers of the population.”
He also confirmed that “the total number of families in Iraq reached approximately 8 million, 54 thousand, and 385 families, while the total number of Iraqis and non-Iraqis present in Iraq reached 46,118,793 individuals at the time the census was conducted,” noting that “the number of foreign residents present in Iraq reached 340,131 people.”
He also explained that “the total population of Iraqis, excluding foreigners, amounted to 45 million and 778, with 23 million and 161 males, representing 50.2 percent of the population, and 22 million and 957 thousand females, representing 49.8 percent of the population,” clarifying that “the number of families headed by men is more than 7 million families and the number of families headed by women is more than 910 thousand families.”
He stated that “the average family size in Iraq is 5.7 individuals, and these families vary between governorates, as some southern governorates have recorded a large number of families that differs from the number of families in western and northern Iraq,” noting that “the population growth rate reached 2.5 percent, and the number of individuals within the age group from zero to 14 years is 16,555,000, representing 35.9 percent of the population. This is a significant indicator that suggests that Iraqi society is a young and promising society in its prime.”
He explained that “the number of individuals within the age group, which is the working age group between 15 and 64 years, amounts to 27,875,000, representing 60.4 percent, and this means that Iraq has entered the demographic dividend of society,” noting that “the number of individuals aged 65 years and over amounted to 1,688,000, representing 3.6 percent of the population.”
He confirmed that “the age dependency ratio is 65, the age dependency ratio for children is 59, and the adult dependency ratio is 6,” noting that “the percentage of owned and free housing with parents reached 72%, private rental 19%, and the total number of housing units is 834,000. This is with regard to private buildings, excluding government buildings, official departments, and camps owned by security agencies from the Ministries of Defense and Interior and other security institutions.”
He also pointed out that “we have completed the information at the governorate level and it is ready and will be delivered to the governor at the governorate, district, sub-district, village, neighborhood and hamlet level, which includes a comprehensive population analysis of the number of families with the number of individuals and the number of service institutions present in this area,” explaining that “the second phase will include an analysis of what these areas will need in terms of services that will be provided to the local governments in order to be the basis for developing development plans.”
He explained that “the Statistics and Geographic Information Systems Authority will begin next week to distribute this data and information to all official institutions, including governorates, ministries and presidencies.”
