Lebanese President Joseph Aoun affirmed on Wednesday that disarming Hezbollah is possible if there is genuine political will, and that this requires three essential elements.
Aoun explained, during a dinner hosted by the Lebanese Ambassador to Washington, Hamada Mouawad, in his honor and that of the accompanying Lebanese delegation, that these elements are the removal of the Israeli occupation from Lebanese territory, the Lebanese army assuming full control over all areas, and the implementation of a reconstruction program managed solely by the state without any external interference.
In his speech during the ceremony, which was attended by a number of members of Congress and officials in the US administration, President Aoun stressed that Lebanon cannot be safe and united unless it is one country with one army that protects all Lebanese without discrimination.
He argued that the Lebanese model deserves protection not only for Lebanon, but for the entire region, because it is based on the same foundation upon which the United States was built, referring to the values of freedom, pluralism and the rule of law, stressing that the success of the Lebanese experience represents a message of hope for the Middle East and the world.
For her part, Ambassador Hamada Mouawad expressed her appreciation for President Aoun’s visit, considering it a reflection of the United States’ commitment to strengthening the historic relations between the two countries, and working to achieve the aspirations of the Lebanese people for sovereignty, territorial integrity, security, prosperity and peace, in a step that enhances joint cooperation and opens new horizons for bilateral relations between Lebanon and the United States.
