The largest port in the Middle East: Completion date for the first phase of Al-Faw Port
2025/03/16
The Ministry of Transport announced that the first phase of the Grand Faw Port will be completed by the end of 2025.
The Ministry of Transport stated that: “The Grand Faw Port will extend over an area of 54 square kilometers, making it the largest in the Middle East,” noting that “a large naval base will protect the port.”
The first phase of the project includes five major projects: the completion of five piers, the construction of a 62-kilometer road linking Umm Qasr to the Grand Faw Port, the construction of an underwater tunnel (the submerged tunnel is currently under construction), the implementation of the marine canal, and the preparation of the commercial exchange area.
The port is being built on the Al-Faw Peninsula in Basra Governorate at a total cost of €4.6 billion and will have an annual capacity of 99 million tons of various materials. The foundation stone for the project was laid on April 5, 2010.
According to the approved design, the Grand Faw Port will be the largest port in the Gulf and one of the largest ports in the world, reshaping the global maritime transport map. It will contribute to the transport of goods between China, Japan, and Southeast Europe via Iraq to the rest of the world and vice versa.
The Iraqi government proposed the project in 2010 and laid its foundation stone in April of the same year. Its cost at the time was €4.4 billion.
