The Iraqi Parliament begins procedures for electing its president with four candidates competingShafaq News/ On Saturday, the Iraqi Council of Representatives began procedures for electing a new president to succeed the deported Muhammad al-Halbousi, amid competition between 4 candidates.

The Council’s Media Department stated in a brief statement received by Shafaq News Agency, that “the procedures for electing the Speaker of the House of Representatives have been initiated.”

According to information from Shafaq News Agency, the competition for the presidency of the House of Representatives is limited to the candidate of the Sovereignty, Determination and Decisiveness Alliance (Salem Al-Issawi) and the candidate of the Progress Alliance, Muhammad Al-Mashhadani, who is supported by most of the blocs of the coordination framework.

Amer Abdul-Jabbar and Talal Al-Zubaie were also nominated, who later announced his withdrawal from the competition and his support for the nomination of Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani.

Earlier, a parliamentary source told Shafaq News Agency that the blocs of Taqadum, Al-Sadiqoun, Badr, State of Law, the National Union, the representatives of Kirkuk Governorate, and the representatives of Babylon Governorate, led by Rayyan Al-Kaldani, will all vote for Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, as Speaker of Parliament.

Unusually, a parliamentary source revealed “individual” meetings held by members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, away from the calculations of the leaders of the political blocs, to choose a president for the Council.

Political circles within the corridors of the Iraqi Parliament are awaiting with great caution the session to elect the Speaker of the House of Representatives, nearly half a year after the removal of its former speaker, Muhammad al-Halbousi, with differing opinions about the priority of electing Mahmoud al-Mashhadani, or Salem al-Issawi.
