Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadel, announced on Saturday the imminent completion and operation of the Anbar combined cycle gas station, one of the largest power generation stations in Iraq, with a total capacity of 1,600 megawatts.

According to a statement from his media office received by Shafaq News Agency, the minister confirmed that “the project to construct a fuel pipeline from the Akkas gas field to the station site is underway, which represents an important step towards completing the operational requirements.”

He explained that “the project also includes the construction of a 1,000-megawatt transformer station, in addition to transmission lines covering various areas of Anbar Governorate, which will contribute to enhancing the stability of the electrical system in the governorate and neighboring areas.”

According to the minister, “The ministry is awaiting the completion of the investment work in the Akkas gas field by the Ministry of Oil, in preparation for the official start-up of the station.” He stressed that “the operation of the Anbar combined cycle gas station will represent a qualitative shift in the Iraqi energy sector and will contribute to meeting a large portion of the growing demand for electricity in the country.”

Last July, the Iraqi Ministry of Oil signed a contract with the American company Schlumberger to develop production at the Akkas gas field in Anbar Governorate.
