State of Law coalition member Haider Al-Lami said on Monday that the government’s silence on America’s decisions to keep its forces in Iraq is surprising.

Al-Lami said in a statement to the Maalouma Agency, “Removing the Americans from Iraq is baseless because of the government’s contradictory actions,” noting that “its silence on extending the military presence is strange and raises many questions.”

He continued, “The extension under false pretexts indicates American maneuvers to remain in the region for as long as possible to obtain the greatest amount of economic and military gains,” pointing out that “the American pressure not to allow Iraq to purchase defense systems is intended to keep Iraq weak and their continued presence.”

Al-Lami concluded by saying, “American violations of Iraqi sovereignty are repeated in military operations and political interventions, in addition to the decisions it takes alone and the government remains silent about them,” calling on the government to “respond to this extension and expedite the removal of forces from the country.”

US President Joe Biden announced the extension of the state of emergency in Iraq for an additional year in light of government silence, despite the fact that popular and political circles are calling for the Americans to leave as quickly as possible.
