The G7 nations affirmed on Tuesday the “urgent need” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, reiterating their commitment to maintaining the stability of global energy markets amid escalating tensions in the region.
In a joint statement issued during their meeting in Paris, the group’s finance ministers said that “the stability of energy markets is a priority for the global economy, and it is essential to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ensure freedom of navigation therein.”
The statement added that “large and persistent imbalances in global current accounts could exacerbate trade tensions,” calling for enhanced international coordination to address current economic challenges.
The G7 group includes the United States, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan, and is one of the world’s largest industrial economies.
The statement comes at a time of escalating tension in the Strait of Hormuz against the backdrop of the war between Iran on one side and Israel and the United States on the other. In recent weeks, Tehran announced new maritime arrangements in the strait, while the United States spoke of implementing maritime measures and diverting commercial vessels, which has raised international concerns about disruptions to oil supplies and a rise in global energy prices.
