Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Ministry of Transport announced that air traffic and air navigation will remain suspended at the country’s airports, with the exception of Basra International Airport, which resumed flights starting Sunday, during the daytime only.
The ministry said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that the General Company for Air Navigation Services confirms the continued suspension of civil aviation in Iraqi airspace, with the exception of airspace related to the departure and arrival of aircraft to Basra International Airport. It also confirmed the directive to return stranded passengers at various international airports to their homeland, based on the directives of the Prime Minister.
The ministry added that, due to the deteriorating security situation in the region, the General Company for Air Navigation Services continues to suspend flights in Iraqi airspace and airports, with the exception of airspace related to the departure and arrival of aircraft to Basra International Airport, in order to preserve the safety of civil aviation and passengers.
The statement continued, stating that the Air Navigation Company is responsible for managing air traffic in Iraqi airspace and airports, and is also responsible for announcing the nature and safety of the airspace, based on the company’s internal regulations, which have been in effect since its establishment in 2017. It called on all institutions to adhere to applicable laws and regulations.
In its statement, the Ministry also called on citizens and the media to obtain information on Iraqi air traffic and navigation exclusively from official sources in the Ministry of Transport.
The statement noted that Iraqi Airways, a subsidiary of the Ministry of Transport, will operate a number of flights from Basra International Airport during the day on Sunday to a number of international airports to transport stranded passengers.
