A prominent leader in the Shiite National Movement, led by Muqtada al-Sadr, commented on Saturday on the Dawa Party’s announcement of its official nomination of its Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the premiership in the coming period.

The leader, who asked not to be named, told Shafaq News Agency that “the Sadr movement is certainly opposed in principle to the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki for the Iraqi government, and this step is a continuation of the logic of failure and corruption that Iraq has suffered from in recent years.”

He added that “the nomination of Maliki is not intended to guarantee political stability, but rather reflects narrow interests that conflict with the aspirations for reform. The Sadrist movement is closely monitoring developments, and its position on boycotting the political process does not mean absence from the scene, but rather a clear message against the continuation of the old elites in power.”

The leader pointed out that “the Sadr movement retains the right to oppose and defend its national vision, and passing the nomination of Maliki may exacerbate popular frustration and undermine the reform project. If this trend continues, the movement may resort to reconsidering its tools, including mobilizing the street to warn political forces of the dangers of handing over the state to those who have not achieved change and reform.”

He concluded by saying that “the Sadr movement will closely monitor the situation and will not hesitate to confront any attempt to reproduce corruption, failure, and the failure to achieve the reform and change that the people and the religious authority are calling for.”

Earlier today, the Shura Council of the Islamic Dawa Party decided to nominate the party’s Secretary-General, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of Prime Minister in the next Iraqi government.

The Coordination Framework announced last Monday the formation of two committees. The first committee is concerned with forming the government and includes Ammar al-Hakim, Humam Hamoudi and Abdul-Sada al-Fariji, while the second committee is concerned with negotiating with the political parties and includes Nouri al-Maliki, Hadi al-Amiri, Faleh al-Fayyad and Mohsen al-Mandalawi.

According to sources who spoke to Shafaq News Agency, the committee for interviewing candidates for the next Iraqi government, which is part of the coordination framework, has received 5 CVs from candidates for the position.

The names are State of Law leader Nouri al-Maliki, caretaker Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, intelligence chief Hamid al-Shatri, former Minister of Youth and Sports Abdul Hussein Abtan, and head of the Accountability and Justice Commission Bassem al-Badri.
