The Federal Supreme Court (the highest judicial authority in Iraq) decided on Sunday to postpone consideration of the case concerning the formation of the new government of the Kurdistan Region until next month.

According to the information received, the court has set October 26 as the new date for holding the session dedicated to this matter.

The decision to postpone comes in conjunction with what was announced yesterday, Saturday, by Ali Hama Salih, the rapporteur of the Kurdistan Position Movement, regarding the Federal Supreme Court holding a session today, Sunday, to consider two complaints; the first includes the lawsuit filed regarding the unconstitutionality of the Kurdistan Parliament in its current session, while the second relates to the delay in forming the new government of the region.

Despite the passage of nearly two years since the legislative elections in the region, the tenth government cabinet remains stuck amid ongoing political disputes between the two main parties: the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan.

The Kurdistan Region Parliament elections, held on October 20, 2024, produced a new political reality that redrew the balance of power within the parliament without granting any party a comfortable majority to form a government on its own, making consensus the essential condition for proceeding with the nomination of the cabinet.

According to the final election results, the Democratic Party won 39 seats, topping the list of political forces. The Patriotic Union came in second with 23 seats, and the New Generation Movement secured 15 seats. The Kurdistan Islamic Union won 7 seats, the Stance Movement 4 seats, and the Kurdistan Justice Group 3 seats. The remaining seats were distributed among other parties and quota-based groups.
