The currency exchange markets in the Kurdistan Region witnessed a rise in the exchange rate of the US dollar against the Iraqi dinar on Sunday, while the Iranian toman continued its decline against the US currency.
According to market indicators, the exchange rate for 100 US dollars reached approximately 155,750 Iraqi dinars, while the price of 100 dollars reached 12,550,000 Iranian tomans.
Other foreign currencies also recorded varying exchange rates, with 100 euros reaching about 176,000 dinars, 100 British pounds 203,000 dinars, while 1,000 Swedish kronor reached 147,000 dinars and 1,000 Norwegian kroner reached 132,000 dinars.
Commenting on the reasons for the rise of the dollar, economist Kawa Sheikh Ahmed told a correspondent for Shafaq News Agency that “a number of factors are behind the rise in the price of the dollar against the Iraqi dinar and the Iranian toman, most notably the tense security and political situation in the region, especially the recent developments related to Lebanon and the possibility of an Iranian response to those developments.”
He added that “the increased demand for the dollar during the current period also contributed to raising its prices, especially after the federal government moved towards implementing the ASYCUDA system for the unified customs tariff at the border crossings, as a number of traders resorted to selling dollars and buying Iraqi dinars on the basis that customs transactions would be in dinars, but the delay in implementing the system or not implementing it as expected led to a change in the equation in the market.”
Sheikh Ahmed explained that “the decline in the value of the Iranian toman is linked to Iran’s attempts to withdraw dollars from the markets and inject larger quantities of the local currency, which led to a decrease in the value of the toman against the dollar.”
The economist predicted that exchange rates would witness relative stability if the political and security situation in the region improved, ruling out the possibility of the exchange rate of 100 dollars reaching 180,000 dinars as some media outlets are promoting, explaining that “talk of the dollar reaching record high levels is not based on realistic economic data at the present time.”
