In the context of the worsening economic crisis, the record-breaking surge in foreign currency prices in the Iranian market saw the price of the US dollar exceed 128,000 tomans.
Websites specializing in monitoring currency prices in Iran reported on Sunday, December 14, that the price of each US dollar rose to more than 128,600 tomans, the euro to more than 151,040 tomans, and the British pound to more than 171,960 tomans.
In recent weeks, Iranian markets have witnessed a surge in currency and gold prices, with successive record highs being recorded, opening a new path for price increases.
The rise in the dollar’s value in Iran coincided with an increase in gasoline prices. A three-tiered gasoline pricing plan was implemented across Iran starting Saturday morning, December 13th.
Under this plan, the allocated gasoline is still offered at a price of 1,500 and 3,000 tomans, while excess consumption, as well as gasoline for government and imported vehicles and some luxury cars, is charged at a price of 5,000 tomans.
In recent months, runaway inflation and rising foreign currency prices have raised further concerns about the deteriorating economic situation in Iran, a trend that has intensified following the return of international sanctions and the insistence of Iranian regime officials on continuing the nuclear program.
Last year, food prices in Iran rose by more than 66 percent on average.
