Information/Exclusive:
MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi accused Parliament Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani on Tuesday of forcibly passing the ambassadorial list despite the objections of a majority of MPs. He explained that the list was passed by a vote in which only about ten MPs participated, after most members withdrew from the session.
Al-Moussawi told Al-Maalouma, “Al-Mashhadani insisted on passing the ambassadorial list despite objections from a wide range of political and parliamentary blocs. Most MPs withdrew from the chamber in an attempt to break the quorum. However, the parliament speaker passed the list with a vote of no more than 10 MPs.” He noted that “this constitutes a serious constitutional violation and a blatant breach of the internal regulations.”
He added, “What happened reveals that Al-Mashhadani is not up to the task of being a parliament speaker and lacks leadership,” warning that “the ambassadorial list, as currently formulated, represents the greatest corruption catastrophe in Iraq’s history because it was enshrined in the principle of political quotas, far removed from standards of competence and experience.”
Al-Moussawi asserted that “most of the ambassadors appointed do not possess the required qualifications, but were imposed through narrow partisan channels, which has deprived Iraq of its diplomatic standing on the international stage.”
It is noteworthy that the passing of the ambassadors list sparked a wave of widespread controversy within political and popular circles, amid calls to review the voting mechanism and re-submit the list for discussion according to professional and transparent principles, especially since among the ambassadors’ names is the son of Parliament Speaker Abdul Basit Mahmoud Al-Mashhadani, as well as the son of the controversial politician Yazan Mishaan Al-Jubouri.
