The Parliamentary Agriculture and Water Committee stressed on Sunday the need to double water desalination projects in ten Iraqi governorates to address the escalating drought crisis.
Committee member MP Thaer al-Jubouri told Al-Maalouma, “The water scarcity in a number of Iraqi governorates, especially with the approach of the summer season of 2025, requires the adoption of strategic options because the water crisis is no longer temporary, but rather stems from multiple causes and worsens year after year.”
Al-Jubouri added, “The committee calls for doubling water desalination projects in ten governorates, by relying on artesian wells to feed the desalination plants, especially in areas suffering from chronic drought.” He noted that “ensuring water supply in these areas will prevent waves of displacement of their residents, whether in the marshlands or in the rest of the cities in central and southern Iraq.”
He pointed out that “desalination is an experiment adopted by many countries in the region, and has proven successful in providing potable water for millions of people,” explaining that “replicating these experiments and adapting them to the Iraqi environment will create a state of stability and limit the repercussions of drought waves, especially in rural areas.”
Al-Jubouri explained that “desalination can also open up broad horizons in the agricultural sector, by supporting modern agricultural projects that rely on water-reducing technologies, which contributes to significantly increasing production despite limited resources.”
It’s worth noting that several regions of the country have been suffering from a severe drought for years, prompting growing calls to adopt desalination projects, particularly through artesian wells, to ensure the continued supply of drinking water.
