Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman and negotiating team member Ismail Baghaei confirmed on Monday that the memorandum of understanding signed with the United States “has practically ended,” while stressing that all American bases in the region are now within Iran’s “target bank.”
Baqaei opened his weekly press conference by greeting the Iraqi people for their participation in the funeral of the late Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, noting that “Tehran takes into consideration and puts on its agenda the popular demands in Iran calling for revenge for Khamenei’s blood.”
In the context of the recent tensions, he said that “the United States has clearly violated the agreement,” noting that it “violated various parts of the fourteen provisions of the memorandum of understanding within a short period” and that Tehran “will reciprocate any commitment or non-commitment from the other party.”
He added that his country would use all available means and opportunities at the international level to document the “crimes committed” and work to achieve justice for the Iranian people, as he put it.
Baqai explained that “last Saturday’s negotiations focused primarily on how to manage the Strait of Hormuz in coordination with the Sultanate of Oman,” criticizing the statement issued by the three European countries regarding the Strait of Hormuz.
He stressed that Iran has the right to take any measures to protect its sovereignty and will not allow the United States or Israel to use the Strait of Hormuz to harm Iran, noting that “any area or part of the territory of any country used to attack Iran will be considered covered by Iranian defensive measures.”
As Baghaei pointed out, “None of the American bases in the countries of the region have been excluded from Iran’s target bank,” stressing that “Tehran will not allow the situation in the Strait of Hormuz to destabilize security and stability in the region.”
On the nuclear issue, Baghaei said that Iran will not grant the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, access to its nuclear facilities.
Regarding regional relations, Baqai criticized the statements of Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, describing them as “incorrect”.
He called on Ankara to avoid raising issues that he said justify Israel’s expansionist policies, and demanded that Turkish officials clarify their positions.
